A Kentucky police officer used his martial arts training to subdue an unruly bar patron over the weekend, and the struggle knocked off the officer's body camera, giving an interesting angle on the fight.
The incident happened shortly before 2 a.m. when Louisville Police Officer Mason Barnes was flagged down by a bouncer at a bar, WDRB-TV reports. A belligerent customer—identified as Noah Carullo—refused to leave the bar, and he pulled a gun on the bouncer.
When Barnes approached Carullo, the man fled the scene, and the officer gave pursuit. Barnes chased Carullo down, but his body camera fell off, and a bystander positioned it toward a confrontation between the two.
In the footage, Carullo is seen on top of Barnes, who's able to wrap his legs around the suspect's neck. Barnes was able to detain Carullo until more officers arrived and took him into custody.
"Even being on the bottom, (Barnes) was in more control than the aggressor," said Officer Adam Sears, the department's training coordinator who credits Barnes' training in Gracie Survival Tactics with let him get the upper hand.
"It helps a small officer to defend themselves and control or arrest someone who's much larger," he added. "And it can help a large officer arrest somebody who's much smaller without looking like everything they're doing is unreasonable."
